John Jameson’s Dublin Distillery was founded in 1780 and laid down a tradition for quality and success. His family motto and guiding philosophy was “Since Metu”, meaning “Without Fear”, which appears today on every bottle of Jameson
He set new standards in whiskey distilling. He invested in the latest industrial processes and when he discovered that certain strains of barley made a superior whiskey, he persuaded local farmers to grow them by providing seed grain every spring. He also insisted that only the finest casks available be used for maturation
By 1820, John Jameson & Sons was the second largest distilling company in Ireland. News about the quality of the Jameson whiskeys travelled far and wide and demand was growing not just at home but abroad
Today, over 220 years after John Jameson opened his distillery doors, Jameson Irish Whiskey is the fastest growing international whiskey in the world and is enjoyed in 110 countries across the globe. John Jameson’s passion lives on in the exceptionally smooth Irish whiskey that still bears his name
In February 2006 Jameson reached the landmark of two million cases and is now amongst the top 50 Global Spirits Brands. It is obvious that Jameson is the brand driving the growth of Irish whiskey, one of the most dynamic categories within today’s world whiskey market
Irish Whiskey
In the 6th century, the western world discovered the secret of distillation. The alembic used to distil perfume was brought to Ireland by missionary monks, who soon put it to much better use. They distilled spirit from ingredients of barley, water and yeast. Their spirit, Uisce Beatha, Irish for “water of life” became known as whisk(e)y
Today, whisk(e)y is one of the world’s favourite spirits with over 2.5 billion bottles consumed every year (IWSR 2003)
Irish Whiskey Styles:
- Pure Pot Still Whiskey

- Grain Whiskey
A lighter whiskey made from other cereal grains such as maize or wheat, and distilled three times in Column Stills
- Single Malt Whiskey
Made from 100% malted barley, distilled three times in Pot Stills in one distillery
- Blended Irish Whiskey
Whiskeys created from a blend of more than one style of Irish whiskey
Typical Characteristics of Irish Whiskey
Irish whiskey is triple distilled for exceptional smoothness and matured for a minimum of three years, mainly in seasoned oak casks that previously held bourbon or sherry. The flavour is well balanced and smooth and there is no smoky flavour that is often characteristic of Scotch whisky
What Makes the Jameson Whiskey Unique?
Ireland’s temperate climate and unspoilt countryside has always ensured a plentiful supply of the natural ingredients vital to good whiskey – golden barley and pure water. Tradition plays a large part in whiskey-making in Ireland and some of its features are unique. Barley used for malt differs from malt in Scotland where the barley is dried using smoke which gives Scotch whisky its smoky/peaty flavour
Also, unlike most of the world’s whiskeys, Irish Distillers, in line with tradition, distils its whiskeys three times. This ensures a final product which is particularly smooth and pure. Before bottling, whiskeys are “vatted” or married together to produce the Jameson whiskey which the consumer has come to know and appreciate
Jameson is distilled in the Midleton Distillery in Co. Cork. Midleton is the only distillery in the world that produces all three styles of whiskey under the same roof: pure Pot Still, single malt and grain whiskey
And from this unique home of the golden liquid comes the world’s favourite Irish whiskey – Jameson
